New Feature on Teamwork Projects: Portfolio

Posted

Project managers like you have gone from managing a single, complex project to managing multiple projects at a time, which adds new dimensions and responsibilities to each day. It requires you to be extremely organized and responsive–and multi-task like a hero. Even with these skills, it’s nice to have a solution that can help bring it all together.

We want to make it easy for anyone who is juggling several projects at a time to instantly review the status of the projects they’re working on.

Because our users loved the addition of Board View for Tasks, we decided to take that concept of a visual workflow and give it another job by adding Portfolio–a feature that allows you to add projects to a board and instantly assess their progress.

Now, instead of clicking through several screens to gather pertinent information on multiple projects, project managers, program managers or anyone at your company’s executive level, can use Portfolio to get a high level overview on their projects.

Portfolio

How to Use Portfolio

To get started, you need to be on the professional price plan or above. Simply click “add board,” give the board a name and start adding your columns. Using the backlog button, you can display a full list of your projects. To get a project onto a column, just drag and drop it onto a card. A good use of a column within the portfolio board is to label it as a status or a stage, and then you can have an instant status update on all your projects.

portfolio board

With each card now representing a project, you can retrieve even more detail by clicking the a card which will open up the same project summary that you’re used to seeing in your overview. From there, you can analyse the project even further. See how many tasks are overdue, how many are completed, the performance of individual team members, what’s on the task board, review the project trend and more Everything is accessible at your fingertips, and you won’t need to do too much searching to find the information you need.

More information on the column settings and permissions is available through this article on our help doc site. You can also take a look at the video below to get you up and running in no time.

Remember that we’re always working to improve this feature. We take your comments and suggestions very seriously, so as you work with Portfolio and its new features, let us know if how we can make it even better.

In the meantime, Portfolio should help project managers, this should make your job easier and save you some valuable time when you’re analysing the progress of your projects.

*Portfolio is available on the professional plan and higher.

Yes! We are just trialing Teamwork and comparing with a number of other tools. We’ve loved what we’ve seen but I was lamenting about how it’s just missing this ONE thing… and this was it!

Super excited to getting on board with teamwork.

Hi Jesse,

That’s awesome. Please let us know if we can help with anything while you’re getting set up.

I am very disappointed this is only on the professional plan and higher and that you put this information at the bottom of the post. I would not have wasted time trying to figure it out. It’s the feature I have been asking for but unfortunately will not get to use.

Couldn’t agree more. I even emailed support because I thought it was a bug. This proviso should be at the top of the article, not the bottom.

Apart from that, why is Board View for Tasks available on all plans but not this?

We love Teamwork but we’re a bit disappointed on this one. Furthermore, Leanne’s comment about ‘perceived value’ is a bit of a joke. Perceived value is completely relative. We’d happily give up Teamwork Chat which is of little actual value to us and certainly no perceived value in exchange for the Portfolio feature.

Even Basecamp, for all its faults, didn’t stream functionality based on subscription level.

Currently, our Teamwork Projects page does not show a tab for Portfolio under the Projects section. It only shows LIST and CHART. How can I add the PORTFOLIO tab so that I can try out this new feature?

Hi John,
Thanks for reading. You need to be on the professional plan or higher to be able to use this feature.

Looks like an awesome feature! Please consider releasing this on your “Office” subscription level as well — there’s not much about managing our 85 projects that’s any easier compared to the “Professional” level’s cap of 150! 😉 This is a good feature and would help us a lot.

Nice addition but very disappointing not to see it included in the Premium subscription. Looks like we’ll continue with Kanbanize.

Hi Eric,

This feature is only available on the professional plan and higher. You would need to upgrade to see it in your project tab.

Great feature and realized, it’s not for us. See now, you changed pricing silently and started to separate us small offices with features like that from the bigger companies. This is very sad, especially as the jump to the next plan is now bigger than ever before. Do you think, this feature is not important if we have just 40 projects?

Hi Harald,

Thanks for reading and for taking the time to comment. The fact Portfolio is limited to the professional plan and higher isn’t about the number of projects. It is a testament to the perceived value of the feature.

Hi team Teamwork,

This sounds interesting but I agree with other commenters – it’s a shame it isn’t available on other subscription tiers. Do you have any way of demo-ing the functionality within a current subscription, please? Thanks, Tom.

Hi Tom, I just sent you an email – let me know if it doesn’t come through!

Agree with Tom. Also agree that I would have preferred this to be flagged in the post not just in the comments.
Is it possible to test the feature on the lower subscription?
This is a valuable feature that I have been hoping you would add. However, it is a big price jump between the 2 lower tiers that I don’t think we can justify going pro based on this feature alone. I hope you will consider adding it to the lower tier or at least make it available for a lower monthly cost than jumping to the professional tier.
It would also be helpful if we could ‘purchase’ a smaller add-on bundle of projects. For example, for a cost, we could add an additional say 20 projects to the lower tier. Still less expensive than jumping to professional tier. May allow some teams a little more time to grow before needing to go to pro.
Lastly, perhaps you could consider creating a tier between small office and professional that would include higher # of projects and the portfolio feature and have it cost somewhere between the small office and professional.

Hi Michelle,

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

It’s not possible yet to test this feature on a lower subscription. We’re working on a way to make this possible and will let our users know as soon as it happens.

Just messaged my team about this great new feature. Was about to ditch Trello but then read the comments about Subscription level. Shame looks great.

Disappointed that those of us in smaller organisations who are none-the-less loyal to Teamwork are being excluded from this feature.

WTF – *Portfolio is available on the professional plan and higher.?!

Really?! – it costs extra to release an already developed feature to everyone. This is starting to smell like really poor business practice.

Dear Teamwork,
This is a good functions but you have an “discriminating attitude” vs your clients. How this strategy match with your actual value proposition based on active projects / File storage (GB)?
Thanks

CONGRATULATIONS Teamwork team, this is a fantastic feature. I finished reading the post decided to migrate all my other projects to the teamwork, when I was surprised by the news that to have access to this I must pay 100 more (professional plan). Unfortunately I have to continue to do this control with other tools.

I’m with the numerous Office level subscribers above who are really disappointed to see you starting to hold back new features in order to force companies to upgrade.

Our business has grown up with Teamwork and we’ve always been great supporters and advocates of Teamwork.

Holding back on this feature will not encourage us to upgrade and pay an extra $700 plus /year.

What it will do, however, is undermine our belief in, respect for and commitment to Teamwork.

I sincerely hope you see the short sightedness of this move and reconsider this approach to feature availability.

JJ Sereday

Ah! Please please allow this feature to be accessible for lower tiered plans. One of the best aspects of Teamwork is how you didn’t cripple your services based on pricing tiers. 🙂

What surprised me the most was the incoherence, since I believed that the business model of teamwork was a definition of a plan according to the number of projects and not a limitation of functionality. This was a strong factor when I decided to migrate to this tool. Will new features be released from now on just for more expensive plans?

Reply
Leanne King

Hi Richard,

Thanks for reading. Honestly, it very much depends on the feature but it is likely that some features will be limited to different price plans going forward.

What is the visibility of this to your customers? Are there separate roadmaps now based on your tier level?

There are functions that are on the roadmap that I am sticking it out for as I do really like teamwork. However due to our business it will be a while before we are at a size to justify the additional cost (which I see has increased as well).

I would appreciate some communication here as we are invested in teamwork and want to make it work for the long term.

Leanne, you’ve said this before – and just like last time you said it, it makes absolutely no sense.

I will also repeat my previous response: This is bad business practice – because those of us who build software for a living understand that there is $0 actual cost to you release this feature to ALL plans once it’s already implemented. What Teamwork is actually doing is going for the cash grab.

What if I said if you don’t release this feature to my account I will move my business to another provider (of which there are plenty). Would Teamwork then consider providing me with the functionality in order to keep my business?

Reply
Leanne King

Hi Dimitry,

Again, I’m sorry to hear you feel this way. This feature will remain on the professional plan and up so I understand if you need to move to another provider to suit your needs.

I wish you well.

This seems to be the *only* function besides SSO and 2 factor ID that you are limiting from your Office users. I hope this doesn’t become a regular practice. Not what I signed up for — really disappointing and seems to be a departure from your regular business practice. I hope you will reconsider.

I agree with others….more and more value is being withheld from the lower subscription levels i guess in an effort to force us on the lower subscription levels to upgrade to professional. I for one don’t have enough projects to justify upgrading – more than likely I will move to another solution if this continues.

Leanne, thanks for the sincerity. Understanding where you are going and changes in the way the tool is charged is very important to customers.

This is very sad when they start limiting features by plan. One of the reasons I went with Teamworks is they don’t limit features and are small business friendly. Sadly it looks like those days are numbered.

Hi, This is a great feature!! I am user of teamwork since 2008 and I had to search for other kanban soft alternatives to cover this flaw.

It will be useful if a project could be added to more than one board at a time so we could use several boards to sort the workload with different criteria. For example, a board to see project progression by stages, and other to sort projects by assigned team members having a glimpse of workload by team member. In the latter scenario it would also be useful if it were possible to place the same project in two or more columns at the same time to reflect that a project is shared by different people at the same time. Unfortunately now a project can only be placed in one column at a time.
I also would love to see this feature accessible for lower tiered plans. I look forward to hearing your comments.
All the best

Also agree with the comments above. We are a small organization with multi-million $ projects and this tool has been simple to use for non-project focused staff, however, my GM has always struggled with the fact he can’t get a snapshot of where all the projects are easily. Would make more sense to adjust your pricing than start down this way it appears….

I have been a member of teamwork for 2 years. One of the reasons that made me look at this company in a different way is the way of charging, without limiting by functionality but by quantity of projects. In my opinion an excellent way to allow small businesses access to the features used by larger competitors, until we become larger when we will pay more. I looked today at the price page of teamwork projects and still this is understood, that is, those who do not know the tool do not see in the price list that the plans now also limit functionalities.

Changing the way you see the market, I believe, is a natural process. But in my opinion, changing the rule in the middle of the game is not very respectful of customers who have believed in you and leaves us very unsure of continuing to believe in this company. What will be the next changes that will come when new opportunities for you become more profitable? Why did not they just change plans for new customers? Did the old clients, who invested and believed in the teamwork, did not deserve this?

You have a great tool and made us believe that they were a different company.

But this is only the modest opinion of a small business.

Hi James,

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

For users on an existing price plan we haven’t made a change. So, if you were paying $49 when you signed up, you are still paying the same now.

I also think it is an interesting feature, that could be used on SAFE metology, but we will not be able to use it because it is too much money difference moving to other plan.

This is the kind of things that could force us to evaluate new tools.

I have my first experience with Teamwork with one of my suppliers in the past and now with my own company I signed up a trial for myself.

Unfortunately I noticed this limited functionality of Boards and it’s really disappointing.

I hope you reconsider this strategy so I can regain the confidence to pay the Small Office subscription ( Not Professional or higher )

Add my name to list of people disappointed that Teamwork is now restricting functionality by plans. This feature should be in the lower plan tiers.

I was so excited to be part of Teamwork and now I’m pretty disheartened by this move. Teamwork was always so small business friendly but it looks like it’s moving away from that model.

I was also surprised by the $20/mo price increase. Also looks like the amount of projects in those plans took a hit. Small Office went from 50 to 40 projects, Professional went from 200 to 150 projects and Business went from 500 to 300 projects.

It would have been nice to get an email blast letting us know things were changing.

I think due to the lack of recent updates, price increase, and this weak subscription limited feature, we are going to take this as our cue to pull the next stop rope.

Guys you really need to listed to your customers here. I am a huge fan of Teamwork but having only recently started out in business it will be a long long time before we grow to the level where we can justify the cost of a Professional subscription. I sincerely hope you guys reconsider your position on this. Building a base of loyal customers who will stick with you as they grow, and who have been able to grow with less friction as they have access to the core features on offer, is surely a strategy worth pursuing.

I lament the move from a capacity-based Customer Success Grow-With-You model to more of a feature-based Vendor Success Crippleware model.

Crippleware pricing is a component of vendor lock-in: During inevitable economic downturns when capacity is lower, downsizing to lower plans is made less flexible because customers lose feature functionality as well as capacity, making it more difficult to ride out the bad times and get more customers vis-a-vis competitors whose vendors allow more flexible pricing based solely on capacity.

I hope Teamwork listens to customers and reconsiders this model.

Also, a jump from 49/month to 169/month is too large a gap between these tiers. Perhaps if a 99/month plan were offered again we could justify upgrading.

Thanks,
Jeff

I’m in the same boat as everyone else. You can’t effectively manage 40 projects on the Small Office plan without this feature. Everyday we have to go into many different projects to see what’s going on with no way for our team to prioritize. A jump from $49 a month to $149 month to unlock this feature is just absurd.

This move has made me lose a lot of respect for Teamwork and at this point we already have one foot out the door and looking for another solution run by a company who isn’t out to shaft the little guy.
