Teamwork Chat updates: introducing emoji reactions, channel types and more!

Teamwork Chat delivers new messaging options with emoji reactions, new channel types, and a better integration with Teamwork Projects!

Say it with an Emoji

Sometimes, you can say it all with just a single emoji. In Teamwork Chat you can now send one of five reactions to any message sent in a conversation or channel, including ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘Ž ๐Ÿ˜‚ โค๏ธ or ๐Ÿ™ . Emoji reactions are a great way of reducing the amount of noise in a chat channel and keeping conversations productive between teams.

We’ve been testing out the reactions feature for the last few weeks here at Teamwork HQ, so we decided to share a couple of the ways we’ve been finding them useful:

  • Express agreement or disagreement via emoji rather than typing out a reply.
  • Take a quick poll or vote with thumbs up or thumbs down emojis, which are quicker to count than a parade of yes or nos.
  • Let a colleague know that you’ve read their message with a quick thumbs up.
  • Show some love for a job well done or a win for your team!

 

 

To add a reaction to a message, just click the emoji icon beneath the message and select one of the five emojis. Or you can click an emoji that has already been added to the message to echo the sentiment. Read more about how it works here in our help doc.

Choose and use your chat channels

As more Chat users depend on this app for instant collaboration and sharing ideas, they’ve requested specialized Chat groups (we call them channels) that adapt to the different ways they communicate with team members and clients. Our product team created three different types of channels for a range of privacy options. Here’s a rundown of what these are and how they work.

1.Public Channels

In a public channel, you have the option to join the channel by going to the Browse Channels area in the app and clicking the Join button. If you leave a public channel, you can rejoin again at any time. All the public channels within a company’s installation are visible and searchable in your list of available channels. You can also preview any public channel by clicking on the channel name, or going directly to the link.

These types of channels are useful for information that all team members can access across different departments, for example: Company News, Support Room, Sales Wins, etc. It’s also helpful for new hires to be automatically added to these rooms when they join.

 

2.Private Channels

Members of Private Channels need to be added by the channel creator or site admin, and when you leave, they will need to add you back in. You’ll only be able to see the Private Channels that include you as a member. Private channels are useful for discussing information that may be confidential between departments or that isn’t quite ready to share with a whole team. For example, you may have specific department channels such as Marketing Team, HR Team, or Leadership Team.

Conversations between individual users will always have private channel visibility.

3.Project Channels

A Project Channel is associated with a specific Teamwork Projects project. Any team member who has access to the project is automatically added to the channel. Users will not be able to leave a project channel. Team members can only see the projects channels that include them as members.

Project Channels are really useful for discussions with every stakeholder in a project. Here at Teamwork.com, we use a Project Channel for each product so all of the people who may need updates can automatically stay in the loop, such as sales, marketing and customer support.

When creating a new channel or editing an existing channel, you’ll be able to select the Private or Public channel visibility option. If you link the channel to a project, the channel visibility will automatically be set to Project. Note that new channels can’t be created or discovered on the iOS and Android apps, this can only be done via desktop.

Add a Channel Description

You can also add a description to your channel to give users more information about the channel. This makes it much easier to keep new team members informed when they’re added to a channels or a new channel is set up. The channel description will appear under the name of each channel in the Browse Channels modal and in the People sidebar of each channel.

Quick Add Tasks to Teamwork Projects

We’ve also made it easier for you to create a task directly from Chat to add to Teamwork Projects. You now have the ability to edit the specifics of your task directly in Chat, making it quicker and easier for you to stay productive. This is really useful if you need to add a quick reminder or action something during a conversation with a team member. You can learn more about this here.

Audio recorded message option must be added. This will make TeamWork chat stay ahead of Slack.
I think your model should be more of Telegram than slack. Telegram is way too powerful in terms of user end features.

Still waiting for an API. Until then, Slack still blows you out of the water. As soon as TW Chat exposes and API, our team will make the switch. But no API is a deal breaker in today’s automated world.

Having an option to listen to an audio playback of a chat message (for example, while on the road) would be a fantastic addition.
