Announcing Teamwork Chat

Posted

The day has finally arrived – you have no idea how hard it’s been to keep this secret from you!

The fruit of over 12 months work, the first stand-alone product that we’ve built since we first started work on Teamwork.com all those years ago, presenting Teamwork Chat (beta).

The Origin Story

Every day we come to work to build great software, software with one purpose – to make the lives of our customers easier. When we started Teamwork.com the basic principle was a fast and easy way to manage all the daily tasks that make up a business. As business has evolved and become more complicated we’ve continued to try and build and develop the features of the platform according to what you, our users, have asked. Some feature enhancements that you asked for and we considered, are so fundamental to how business these days is done that we decided to develop them as separate, stand alone products.

And today, we’re releasing the first of these – Teamwork Chat (beta), a brand new way for your team to communicate in real time.

Teamwork Chat (beta)

We wanted to give you a tool to help them communicate with your team that was faster and more efficient than email and more in keeping with the way they use software to chat in their personal lives; and that’s what Teamwork Chat (beta) is all about – on a basic level you can think of it as a business grade version of WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.

Another critical aspect for us was ensuring that the results of these conversations could be quickly actioned and turned into actual work that needs to get done – so we’re working on giving users the ability to push tasks and information from Teamwork Chat into your existing Teamwork Project Manager account. Ending the era of talk with no follow-up action forever.

Teamwork Chat (beta) is available for Windows and Mac today with iOS, Android and Linux apps coming soon and is available completely for free to any current Teamwork.com user. A stand alone version will be available when the full product launches, for now, you can simply log in using your existing teamwork.com credentials. You can find out more and download the Beta apps here at www.teamwork.com/chat

Please let us know what you think, your feedback is so important to us! Send any thoughts, positives and negatives to chat@teamwork.com

Thanks for your continued support.

Great! Will there be a web version for those who don’t want to install a client (or can’t because of company policies prohibiting sofware installations – think big companies)?

Teamwork is absolutely the best platform for agency’s! We’ve tried several platforms that simply didn’t meet the basics of what we needed. Now with this additional capability (which we were just discussing on yesterday), we are totally satisfied!!!

Cheers to a more productive 2015!

Thanks Xavier, we’re very chuffed at that. We’re not done yet, there’s some more very cool stuff coming shortly.

oh… and the ability to invite “outsiders” (e.g. people not belonging to my company) would be great too 🙂

I very much agree with this! We are using Teamwork to run a project with many organisations and we would like to have a chat that is based around the project – and not just the individual company.
At the moment it doesn’t look like this is possible – or at least I can’t figure out how to set it up if it is.

Hi Aran, Sascha,

Thanks for your feedback. The ability to invite users outside the owner company isn’t available at the moment. However we are working on developing this feature. It’s one of the next things on our roadmap and we hope to release it soon. Please bare with us a little longer as we work on making this feature really great.

Kind Regards
Therese

Are chats logged? If not, this new feature would be a bad idea for us, as a critical reason we use Teamwork is to capture all conversations on our projects–we need to be able to find conversations later for both practical and legal reasons.

Reply
Rick

Agreed. I work hard to eliminate loose threads. We uninstalled MSN chat a few years ago because people were agreeing to work packages in chat and leaving important details that were lost and not captured.

I know chat is very important in many places I’ve consulted but I always discourage its use for business.

I’ll install this though and give it a look.

Rick, you’ve hit exactly on why we built Teamwork Chat and our thinking behind it. Companies need to communicate in real time but still need to capture important information. As we move from the beta to the full release, you’ll see how we think we’ve come up with a great solution to this.

can’t find chat when you go back in unless you click on update button.
chat would not recognise my password and despite several requests for help no one had put their hard above the parapet – not very impressed

Nice! Any chance it’ll get a Proxy setting though? Because all workstations here need to go through a proxy to access the outside world…

Maybe in time, I’ll put it on the list for the guys, not something thats currently there.

Great update! To make this really usable the chat need to be logged with related projects and should be searchable.

Also waiting for the integration to take actions on tasks from within chat.

Reply
charlene

Hi – any updates on search/linking to teamwork at large? Was excited to check this out but this is a key need for us (searchability).

Reply
Adrian Kerr

Hi Charlene,

The only option at the moment is to create a task from within Teamwork Chat, we have many more plans to make it a tighter integration and we hope to see some of these really soon.

Hi, ++ for the search functions. Without search, it is simply useless for us. We would love to skip skype to use tw chat (waiting since January 2015…), but without search we won’t.
Any news about this ?

Semmy

I would like to have this as web based service – I am often on my chromebook where I cant download software plus I dont want to add yet another chat application – if it would be integrated with the weblogin somehow it might be interesting.

This has potential. Curious, benefits to using this as opposed to say GChat when my entire company is using the later of the two?

Reply
The Teamwork.com Team

We’re just finishing up on work directly integrating the two in multiple ways so instead of having conversations in something like GChat and them having to take relevant information from that and enter it manually in teamworkPM, it could all happen automatically, keeping all the relevant information in the right places if you wanted.

Installed it, entered details, choose remember me, hit sign in. realized i made a mistake in my credentials. Now i cant stop it from auto signing in everytime i open it to change the details. it never fails either it just hangs there trying to sign in. Tried to re-install it but it still remembers my details.
Also i can see from task manager that it starts the .exe twice which sounds odd

is teamwork chat a free app with Teamwork? If so, please email me instructions on the best way to implement and utilize before I start.

Reply
The Teamwork.com Team

Hi Angela
Yes, Teamwork Chat is completely free but it isn’t a feature for TeamworkPM, it’s a completely new and separate product. This is the beta version, designed to introduce the idea and collect feedback. We’re just finishing up on work directly integrating the two in multiple ways but yes, at the moment you must use the separate client for chat, it doesn’t work within teamworkPM. We’ll have a lot of exciting news to share about features and more in the coming weeks.

Reply
Denise

Can we chat from within Teamwork PM or do we need to go out to the Teamwork Chat program to initiate a chat?

If we can initiate a chat from with Teamwork PM, will the chat history store for the related project we initiate a chat from? If not, that would be a cool feature and would address another user’s question previously about storing chats w/related projects.

I downloaded the Teamwork Chat and when I logged into Teamwork PM, I couldn’t see where to initiate a chat from within Teamwork PM. I did see a link in the menu under my picture that said, Get Teamwork Chat, but that was just going to have me install Teamwork Chat again.

Thanks in advance for the help with this.

Real Time Chat is such a great feature. Can’t wait to try it out! Will you be adding time zone options to Calendar Events this year? Our team is spread across the nation and when I book an appt, it does not allow me the option to select the time zone where the event is taking place. This feature is available in google cal so was wondering if you will add it to your calendar features? Thanks!

I am trying to login and didn’t put the “.teamwork.com” at the end of my URL and now the app has been spinning forever. I close it and try again and it defaults all my info as I checked “Remember me” and the spinning starts as soon as I open it.

Any way to reset my login creds on the app? I tried removing them and closing the app but they were there once I reopened it.

Really excited about this new app! We have been in iChat/Messages for years and hate it since the recent updates. So far we’re really liking the chat application as an internal office communication tool and looking forward to seeing how it integrates with Teamwork PM!

Everytime I try to log in a get an error page saying a problem has occured. I just redownloaded the latest version of 0.9.5, is there any work around for this?

I think I would like Chat if it allowed me to communicate with more than the people in my current company. I have 4 companies setup with various people in each.
As it currently is set, I can’t use it unless I move everyone to the same company. That’s not good for our organization. But thanks.

Hi Shannon,

Good to hear from you.

This is something that will be coming, there are many more amazing things to come 🙂

Currently it’s difficult to setup room without having to add multiple people in the message. Start a new conversation window doesn’t really work very well right now. Would be nice to just have the ability as an admin to create what rooms will be available. Having a list of preset rooms the team can check into would be great.

Ability to remove conversations from the list on the left would be nice.

Mobile? Hoping you’ll find a way to incorporate chat into the existing iPhone and Android apps. The last thing we want is to have everyone have to run two apps on their phones. Hard enough to support a large company with the single app.

We look forward to the final product!!

great work guys!

Any more info on the iPhone/Android apps? Really awesome idea and a potential Skype replacement for us (in terms of chat) but without the mobile version we wouldn’t make that shift.

The New Chat is a great addition, but crashes on my Windows XP machine, saying idle.exe is not a valid win32 application? Does it only work on 64bit machines or something? although if i don’t close the error the app seams to run ok until you click OK then it crashes..

Reply
James

I was wondering that if there was going to be an integration of the teamwork notifications from the site into the app. The little bell with the new message count is invaluable to me and others, and wish there was a way to make that stick out a bit more, without it being overly obnoxious. I know its a little out of scope as to what the app currently does.

Reply
Adrian Kerr

Hi James,

Maybe something we will look at, perhaps something you will be able to add as a room or something similar. I’ll add it to the list here.

Adrian

We are having problems installing TeamWork Chat because it is automatically installed in administrator user folder, and we can not change the installation path; and not all users have administrator role in their Computers, and if not Teamwork chat does not work.

Reply
Dusko

Hi Adrian,

I (administrator) have decided to install teamwork chat to all (windows) computers in company. Note that most of users do not have administrator role on their computers. I have noticed the same behavior with installer.. TeamWork is installed in administrator installation path, and non-admin user cannot access it. This problem caused me to give up of TeamworkChat for now. I would be happy to use it, because currently we are using skype/gtalk/hangout/mail/phone for communication..

We are a recent and new customer for teamworkpm. I’d just like to say…wow! What a great add-on this will be.
As a person that develops hardware and software and works with remote developers, I can tell you we have looked at a lot of different packages. Not to mention all of the fabulous features in teamworkpm that make it a superior platform all by itself…this is a major piece that we have been hoping for.
Email is dead. Anybody that tries to use email (even in part) for collaboration with a large team has figured out how impossible that is without a great deal of effort. To be efficient, we absolutely want and need IM for real-time collaboration that can link chat history to a project task.
So creating this stand alone application is a logical first step. And later (but soon according to what we’re reading), we’ll start to see integration with teamworkpm.

I feel compelled to say…
This is “beta” software people. It’s going to have bugs…lots of them! It’s also going to have a lot more features enabled in the future. Development is at a point now where the chat program needs to have some real world use to expose shortcomings and get feedback. Everyone needs take a breath and recognize how massive this software project is for the developers at teamwork and how integrating to teamworkpm is non-trivial.

Let’s give this team a loud round of applause and support them with nothing but the best constructive comments and feedback. I’m certain that they appreciate feature requests…but some of these things people are pointing to are obvious and certainly on their internal roadmap.

This will be a work in progress for a very long time. I’m nonetheless extremely excited!

Here, here. I have been with these guys since their early days, and this product is just the bees knees.

I can now check that phrase off my bucket list to use in describing a software product.

I am really looking forward to using this in our organization, however, we need the Web version, so we are waiting until then.

If you haven’t already, then please implement something similar to what WhatsApp has done with their Web chat. It stays in sync with the mobile app, so if we read a new message on the Web app, it will automatically remove the new message notification on the Android app, so there’s no need to clear it from your mobile device. A brilliant feature that I hope you are implementing into your chat app?

Would love to see integration with Zapier or have a API function so I can show / alert using Hipchat or hangouts. Love the feature and look forward to seeing how more and more customers use it.

Great idea, TeamWork team.

Tossing in my votes for:

(1) Linux client
(2) Accessible from within TeamWork with history saved to related project
(3) Searchable
(4) Logging into TW logs into chat and vice versa
(5) Able to invite external clients/team members with appropriate permissions (i.e., this chat only but not other chats; chat related to a specific project but can only see what is allowed)

Happy and excited! Here is a related Quora question that asked about TeamWork vs. Slack for PM & chat: http://www.quora.com/What-are-the-pros-cons-of-using-Slack-vs-Teamwork-for-Project-Management/

I simply want to add my two cents on Google Apps integration. We live equally in Gmail and Teamwork. We use Google Hangouts Chat to communicate throughout the day. That includes an equal mix of chat, voice and video hangouts.

So adding a separate chat feature (especially a desktop application UGH) is of little interest to us. If your chat feature included chat, voice, video conferencing and was within the teamwork browser in a minimal way (like facebook), then it would be extremely useful to us.

This is such a welcome addition to TW! One thing that I really hope is coming soon:

Turn sounds off. When my music is loud, the alert is INSANELY INTENSE! It would be awesome if that could be turned off, down or both.

How do you delete old conversations from the history of chat?

For example I have people in my conversations that are no longer with the company and I just want to clean it up when browsing in my window. Let me know how. Thank you!

Will chat work within the teamwork project web app so you can message other people on a project etc?

How long until linux is available?

Hi Andrew,

Good to hear from you.

In time it certainly will 🙂 this is the next part of the integration and we have this in place really soon 🙂

As for Linux I can’t give an exact date on this, we will also get this done as soon as we can.

Hello,

I installed teamwork chat a few months ago and for some reasons it crashes on my windows. Every time I restart my computer the teamwork chat windows will always pop up and loading, but it just can’t log in. I tried to reinstall teamwork chat, but it always show message like the followings:

“The following applications are using files that needed to be updated by Setup. It is recommended that you allow Setup to automatically close these applications. After the installation has completed, set up will attempt to restart the applications”
Teamwork Chat.exe
Teamwork Chat.exe
Teamwork Chat.exe
Teamwork Chat.exe

At the bottom of the message box, I see the “Automatically close the applications” button and I click next, however, it’s still not working. I am pretty frustrated because the Teamwork Chat applications automatically started every time I restart my computer and it’s not functioning. Please provide solutions that I can either make this work or uninstall the program.

P.S. I used control panel to uninstall the Teamwork Chat, but it still boot on my screen even though I can’t see this program in the removing software box of the control panel.

+1 for similar issue to Tai Chen.

I stopped using it a while ago as it just locked up on Windows startup and I’d disabled the element in the Task Manager Start Up screen and forgotten about it.

Just got around to uninstalling it from the machine today, and it still shows in the start up menu on Task Manager.

I’ll find a way to get rid of it completely, but just letting you know.

Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately not. We’re a little while away from this yet! We’re trying to get some of the fundamentals of the app covered off first.

Sorry it’s not better news!
